The Cork Oak Tree Protected by Law in Portugal

Posted by Olive McKillop on

I had been selling cork items for some time and decided to visit Portugal, home of cork, to see the trees for myself.  I was absolutely amazed to find out that the trees are protected by law in Portugal.

Yes my first trip to Portugal took me to the Alentejo region where I saw how vast the forests of cork trees really are.  Around Evora, which is a UNESCO City in the region, apart from the cork forests, there were also many plantations of olives and grapes.  That's when a local told me that good news the Cork Oak Tree (Quercus suber) is protected by law so fortunately it has to be preserved.

Find out more about the tree and it's protection on this website biodiversity website by The Navigator.
